Role of magnesium oxide in ceramics

The Global Magnesium Oxide Market size was estimated at USD 1,982.11 million in 2021 and expected to reach USD 2,098.47 million in 2022, and is projected to grow at a CAGR 6.12% to reach USD 2,831.

MgO uses magnesium oxide as part of its cement mixture to create panels that can be used in residential and commercial constriction as a replacement for conventional materials like drywall.

The panels are fire resistant, mould-resistant, durable and environmentally friendly as they don’t produce off-gas.Magnesium oxide (MgO) has a very high melting point of 2800℃. High melting point, along with resistance to basic slags, wide availability, and moderate cost makes dead burned magnesium oxide the choice for heat intensive metal, glass, and fired-ceramic applications.

By far, the largest consumer of magnesium oxide worldwide is the refractory industry. Monolithic gunnables, rammables, castables, spinel formulations, and magnesia carbon based refractory bricks, all formulated using dead burned magnesium oxide, are widely used for basic steel refractory linings. These products are also used in ferroalloy, non-ferrous, glass and ceramic kiln applications.

As a new type of ceramic functional material, foam ceramic materials have begun since the 1970s. The MgO foam ceramics has a unique three-dimensional stereo mesh structure, which makes it have 60%-90% opening rate. It can efficiently remove large pieces of debris in metal liquid and most tiny suspended mixes. Degree, high air pores, low thermal conductivity, low manufacturing cost, simple preparation process, good mechanical performance.

Magnesium oxide high temperature performance is good, when pouring stainless steel casting with magnesium oxide-based ceramic cores, even if the pouring temperature is as high as 1650℃, the core material will not react with the alloy. It can be soluble in organic acid solutions such as phosphoric acid and acetic acid, which is easy to remove core, does not produce heat fissure defects, currently has less research on magnesium-based ceramic cores, and has good development prospect.
