How to distinguish between light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide

With the progress of industrialization, magnesium oxide has become a widely used chemical raw material, but different industries have different requirements for the parameters and indicators of magnesium oxide, so there are many types of magnesium oxide on the market, such as light and heavy magnesium oxide. What are the differences between them? Today Zehui will introduce them to you from four aspects.

1. Different bulk densities

The most intuitive difference between light and heavy magnesium oxide is the bulk density. Light magnesium oxide has a large bulk density and is white amorphous powder, which is usually used in medium and high-end industries. Heavy magnesium oxide has a small bulk density and is white or beige powder, which is usually used in low-end industries. The bulk density of light magnesium oxide is about three times that of heavy magnesium oxide.

2. Different properties

Light magnesium oxide has the properties of fluffiness and insolubility. It is insoluble in pure water and organic solvents, but soluble in acid and ammonium salt solutions. After high-temperature calcination, it can be transformed into crystals. Heavy magnesium oxide has the properties of density and solubility. It easily reacts with water to form compounds, and easily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide when exposed to air. When mixed with magnesium chloride solution, it easily forms a gelatinous hardener.

3. Different preparation processes

Light magnesium oxide is generally obtained by calcining substances that are soluble in water, such as magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate or magnesium bicarbonate, into substances that are insoluble in water by chemical methods. The light magnesium oxide produced has a small bulk density, generally 0.2(g/ml). Due to the complex production process, this also leads to higher production costs and relatively higher market prices. Heavy magnesium oxide is generally obtained by directly calcining magnesite or brucite ore. The heavy magnesium oxide produced has a larger bulk density, generally 0.5(g/ml). Due to the simple production process, the sales price is also relatively low.

4. Different application fields

Light magnesium oxide is mainly used for the production of rubber products and chloroprene rubber adhesives, playing the role of acid absorber and accelerator in rubber manufacturing. It plays the role of reducing the sintering temperature in ceramics and enamel. It is used as a filler in the manufacture of grinding wheels, paints and other products. Food-grade light magnesium oxide can be used as a decolorizer for saccharin production, ice cream powder PH regulator and so on. It can also be used in the pharmaceutical field, as an antacid and laxative and so on. Heavy magnesium oxide has a relatively low purity and can be used to produce various magnesium salts and other chemical products. It can also be used in the construction industry as a filler for making artificial chemical floors, artificial marble floors, ceilings, heat insulation boards and so on.
